Richard J. James, age 72, of Britt, passed away at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth on October 25 following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 30, 1944 in Hibbing, MN to Angela and Joseph James. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1962 and Bemidji State University in 1970 with a BS degree in industrial arts. He served in the Army National Guard. He retired from US Steel Minntac in September 2000 with over 30 years of service as a diesel mechanic.
Rich was a kind, compassionate man with great character. He was a fun person and possessed a great sense of humor. He was passionate about the outdoors and nature. He felt fortunate to live in Britt close to the National Forest. He spent countless hours on the many trails of the Big Aspen Recreation Area. Some of his most enjoyable times were spent exploring those trails by walking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing or four wheeling. He also enjoyed camping and kayaking.
Rich loved his family. He took great pride in his grandchildren as he watched them grow and participate in school activities and athletic events.
Rich is survived by his brother Ron of Eagle's Nest Township; two daughters, Kristine (Dan) Maki of Eveleth; Jennifer James of Fredrick, MD; two grandchildren, Gavin and Delaney Maki of Eveleth; his best friend and life partner, Marie Bonneville; and his faithful canine companion, Rascal. He also leaves behind Marie's family, several cousins and many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunts and uncles, and special friend, Mike Skoblar.
