Signe Caroline Poffs, age 89 of Virginia died Tuesday September 25, 2012 in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. She was born January 5, 1923 in Aurora, MN the daughter of William and Lena (Erickson) Johnson, attended school in Makinen and graduated from Cotton High School Class of 1940. Signe married Carl Poffs in July of 1941 and lived in Aurora and Michigan prior to moving to Virginia in 1948. She was employed by the Virginia School District as a cafeteria worker for 18 years. Signe was a longtime member of Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Miriam Circle. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and crocheting.
Signe is survived by children: Judy Poffs of Cottage Grove, MN and Carl Poffs of Wuori Twp, MN; grandchildren: Kevin Poffs of Virginia, MN and Laura (Larry) Banks of Mt. Iron, MN and great-grandchildren Mollie and Tanner Banks and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl in 1967 and brother Gunnar Johnson.
A Gathering time for family and friends will be held Friday. September 28, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Memorial Service in Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church in Virginia, Pastor Nathan Sager will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Mesabi Humane Society or Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran Church.
