Obituary

Virginia L. Askew, age 96 of Virginia, MN, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, one day before her 97th birthday, at Essentia Health Care Center.

Virginia was a lifelong resident of the city of Virginia. She was a very active member of the Peace United Methodist Church, as well as a member of PEO and the Virginia Regional Medical Center Auxiliary for many years. Virginia enjoyed playing bridge, reading, visiting with friends over lunches, and did extensive traveling both in the United States and abroad.

Virginia started her working career as a secretary to the Dean of the Virginia Junior College and from there worked as a secretary to the superintendent of the Virginia School district from 1966 until she retired in 1990.  

She is survived by her 3 nieces: Sandra (Judd) Perko, Lynn (Paul) Olson, and Debra (Jeff) Spawn, along with several great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Levi and Dorothy Askew; brother: Edwin Askew; and sister-in-law: Eleanor Askew.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday August 20, 2026, at the Peace United Methodist Church in Virginia with Pastor Lisa Vick officiating. A visitation will begin one hour before the service at 11:00 am. A private family inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at the Essential Health Care Center for their excellent and compassionate care.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Association, or to the Salvation Army.
