Obituary

Werner L. Salminen, Jr., age 86, lifelong resident of Hibbing died Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in the Hillcrest Adams assisted living facility. He was born January 26, 1924 in Hibbing the son of Werner and Mamie (Collyard) Salminen. He graduated from Hibbing High School, and entered the Navy soon after that. He was united in marriage to Verna Fearing.
Werner worked at many jobs during his life. He was one of the owner/operators of the family business: The Merchant's Warehouse, in Hibbing. He worked at the Susquehanna Mine and at Minntac. He also drove School Bus for Shubat Transportation in Hibbing. A veteran of WWII, Werner served as a pilot aboard the Aircraft Carrier Belleau Wood in the pacific theatre. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the Moose Club. He enjoyed ice fishing, spearing, snowmobiling, and golf.
Werner is survived by two sons: Ross (Kathy) Salminen of Hibbing, and Ron (Christine) Salminen of Stingy Lake; a brother: Mike Salminen; a sister: Doe Utter; four grandchildren: Rachel (Jim) Olson, Rodney (Mandy) Salminen, Nathan Salminen, and Tina Salminen; four great-grandchildren: Aubri, Austin, Mason, and Hannah.
Werner was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife: Verna in 2002.
A memorial service for Werner will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 11, 2010 in the Anderson-Daniels Funeral Home Chapel. Greg Anderson will serve as the celebrant.
