William D. "Bill" Rolfe, age 88 of Chisholm, died Saturday, December 19, 2009, in the University Medical Center - Mesabi in Hibbing. He was born February 19, 1921 in Creighton, Ontario the son of William J. and Lillian F. (McDougal) Rolfe. Bill graduated from the Montana School of Mines with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering and married Helen F. Botts on January 2, 1942 in Yuma, AZ. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft Maintenance Mechanic, and a naval aviator. Bill was employed as a Mining Engineer with U.S. Steel for 31 years. He was a charter member of the Hibbing Kiwanis Golden K's, was active with the Boy Scouts of America and the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, and a longtime member of the Chisholm United Methodist Church. Bill was an outdoorsman, a member of the Izaak Walton League, and an avid genealogist.
Bill is survived by children: Charles Rolfe of Raleigh, NC, John (Kathie) Rolfe of Chisholm, Linda (Raymond) Hanson of Mt. Iron, Peggy (Ron) Reierson of Thief River Falls, Marilyn Rolfe of Chisholm, Melvin (Nancy) Rolfe of Cherry, and Bobbi (Mark) Tomasetti of Chisholm; twenty grandchildren: Donald Payne, Lori (Daniel) Mabe, Scott Rolfe, Vennesca (Dave) Vartanesian, Alex Rolfe, Sam Rolfe, Sue (Kelly) Liesmaki, John C. (Dahlia) Rolfe, Roger (Patty) Hanson, LeeAnn (Tony) Gillund, Keith (Karen Kraemer) Reierson, Mark (Shannon) Reierson, Amy Reierson, Melissa (Scott) Schinderle, Mandy (Rick) Giffin, Jason (Amanda) Rolfe, Jennifer Krznarich, Ashley Krznarich, Katie Tomasetti, and Tony Tomasetti; 25 great-grandchildren: Joshua & Logan Payne, Nathan Taylor, Justin Rolfe, Caleigh Tyson, Stephani, Abbie, Nicole, Megan, Jack, & Emma Liesmaki, Tyler, Ella,& Amber Rolfe, Suzie, Mayzie, & Jacob Hanson, Jonah & Samantha Gillund, Karly Nelson, Patrick & Peyton Schinderle, Grace Griffin, Holden Kimball, and baby Rolfe on the way; brothers: Robert (Ann) Rolfe of Champion, NE, Allen Rolfe of Hibbing, and John (Mary) Rolfe of Westhaven, CT; numerous nieces nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Helen Botts Rolfe; an infant son: Warren; infant grandson: Michael; siblings: James, Janet, Betty, and Carol.
A Gathering Time for Family and Friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Services on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 in the United Methodist Church in Chisholm. Pastor Brenda King will officiate. Spring inurnment will be in the Chisholm Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred and may be directed to North Star Hospice or the Chisholm United Methodist Church.
