It is with great sorrow that we mourn our brother, Calvin “Corkey” Wenberg, 73, who died July 31, 2024, at his apartment in Hibbing, Mn.
Corkey was born July 14, 1951 at Fort Lee, Virginia to Charles Donald and Hazel Irene (Warner) Wenberg. He graduated from Morgan Park High School in Duluth, Minnesota in 1969. From 1969 to 1970 Corkey took his general courses at the University of Duluth.
In 1971, Corkey joined the Army. He was stationed in Kentucky at Fort Knox as a Clerk Typist. He earned the National Defense Service Medal Sharp Shooter (Rifke M-16) and the Good Conduct Medal. He then transferred to the 233 Ordnance Detachment in Hanau, West Germany, where he was the Company Clerk of Production Control. Corkey was named the Colonels Orderly, attaining this honor as the result of meeting the highest standard of professional knowledge bearing and the highest soldierly appearance in competition on January 25, 1971.
In 1974, he was transferred to the 9th infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he was the complaint Clerk for the inspector general’s office where he received a commendation for development of the inspector general M150 complaint filing system with both activities materially enhance the efficiency of the office and demonstrated his overall professionalism in the discharge of his duties. He also received a commendation for outstanding performance of duty and exceptional achievements while assigned as clerk typist of complaint Branch.
In 1975, Corkey was Clerk Typist with the VII Corpse G-4 plans and operation in Stuttgart, West Germany. He was discharged as a Sargant in 1977, serving for six years 1971-1977. He than came back to Hibbing, Mn.
Corkey loved to spend time with his nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, reading, especially about America. Corkey was quite the history buff
He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, brother-in-law Phil Theising and new born great-nephew Anthony Fairchild.
Corkey is survived by his brothers: Chuck (Karlene) Wenberg, Duncan, B.C, Canada, John (Christy) Wenberg of Duluth, Mn; Sister: Susan Theising of Rice, Mn; and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. They will miss their uncle Conky.
There will be a graveside service at Maple Hill “Hibbing Park” Cemetery on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. Bill Bauman will officiate.
