Elaine Ann Matanich, age 83, longtime resident of Mt. Iron, peacefully passed away on Sunday May 28th in Duluth, Minnesota, six years and one day after her husband Joe was laid to rest May 27th, 2017. She was born February 9, 1940, in Buhl, Minnesota to Frank and Mary (Peternal) Roberts of Buhl, Minnesota. She graduated from Buhl High School and went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Minnesota. She was united in marriage to Joseph Matanich on June 15, 1963, in Buhl, Minnesota. Elaine was a Home Economics teacher for many years. She was a member of the area chapter of PEO and of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia. She volunteered for various charities including the Sand Lake Shuffle. She enjoyed time at the cabin on Lake Vermilion. She loved crafting and sharing what she created with her friends. She loved to sew, bake, and cook. Her favorite hobby was quilting, especially with her quilting friends at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gilbert. The best part of quilting for her was giving them to family and friends.
Elaine is survived by her children Steven (Felicia) of Mt. Iron, Teresa of Farmington, Minnesota, her brother Franklin, grandchildren Evan, Erynne, and Bauer, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, her parents Frank and Mary Roberts, and her beloved sister Beverly Elletson
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June5, 2023 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia. Reverend Father Brandon Moravitz will celebrate the Mass. The visitation will begin one hour prior to the Mass at the Church. Interment will follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Virginia.
