Fernando & Ly Tibayan Obituary

In honor of Dr. Fernando and Ly Tibayan, there will be a celebration of life on July 6th, 2024, from 10 am until the 11 am. The Memorial Service will take from 11 am to 12 pm at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia.  The Rev. Fr. Brandon Moravitz will officiate.  Inurnment will be at a later date in the Philippines.

Dr. Fernando Navarro Tibayan, Sr. and his wife, Filipinas Domingo Tibayan “Ly”, longtime residents of Britt, MN died together Monday, December 18, 2023, as a result of injuries they sustained in an automobile accident.  


Fernando was born July 1, 1942, in Alabang, Philippines, the son of Catalino and Eusebia (Navarro) Tibayan.  He graduated from Muntinlupa High School and went on to attend the University of Philippines at Diliman, The University of Philippines College of Medicine at Manila, and completed his residency at Columbia University in New York City.  He was a General Surgeon at the Virginia Regional Medical Center for nearly 30 years.  He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.


Ly was born September 24, 1940, in Manila, Philippines, the daughter of Miguel and Anatolia (Bala) Domingo.  She was a graduate of the University of Philippines College of Nursing at Diliman, and went on to receive her Masters of Nursing from DePaul University and her Masters of Public Health Nursing from the University of Minnesota.  Ly was an Associate Professor of Nursing at The University of Alaska at Anchorage, and also taught at DePaul University in Chicago, Beth Israel in New York, and Hibbing Community College.  She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church where she was an active volunteer as well as at the Marquette School.  She was also a Den Mother for the Scouts.


Dr. Fernando and Ly met while they were at the University of Philippines at Diliman and were married in Alabang on May 19, 1968.  They are survived by their children: Fernando (Kristin) Tibayan, Jr. of Prescott, WI, Frederick (Yen) Tibayan of Portland, OR, and Felicia Dawn (Mitch) Leammukda of St. Cloud, MN; 6 grandchildren: Madeleine, Sophia, Alexandra, Ronin, Helo, and Maverick; Fernando’s Sister: Fe (Freddie) Leano of Woodbury, MN; Ly’s siblings: Delisay Tolibas of Pacifica, CA, Pagasa Trinadad of Long Island, NY, Lakambini Alon of Manteca, CA, and Amor Malahito of Quezon City, Philippines; numerous extended family members and friends; and their beloved German Shorthaired Pointer: Trigger.


They were preceded in death by their parents; Fernando’s sister: Ermina; Ly’s brothers: Marangal and Domingo; Ly’s sister: Mahinhin Berdin; and Ly’s brothers-in-law: Manuel Tolibas, Ben Trinidad, Ray Alon, and Renato  Malahito.
