Jean Guy Obituary

Jean Marie Guy (nee Barany), 89, passed away April 7, 2024 in Virginia, Minnesota.  Jean was born on August 15, 1934 in Ashland, WI.  She was a proud Ondossagon High School Aggie graduate of 1952.

Jean was united in marriage to Jack Leroy Guy on June 21, 1952 at Saron Lutheran Church in Ashland, WI.

Jean was a loving wife and a truly devoted mother to Virginia (Bill) DaSilva, Carson City, NV, Elizabeth Guy, Virginia, MN, Jody (Anthony) Guy-Krulc, Virginia, MN, Michelle (Richard) Wolner, Saranac, MI, and Sarah (Andrew) Guy-Levar, Ely, MN, a beloved grandmother to Jack (Jeannine) DaSilva, Kurt (Ashley) DaSilva, Emily Krulc, Rachel (Logan) Krulc Moir, Lisa Wolner Gavranovic, Amy (fiance Alexander Neumann) Wolner, Laura (Lukas) Levar Veil, Claire Levar, and treasured great-grandmother to Benji Gavranovic, Lulu Gavranovic, and Daisy Veil.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Jack, parents Joseph Barany and Jessie Colyar Barany Demboski, siblings Joan Nelson and Joseph Barany Jr.
She is survived by her precious little sister, Judy Chingo, Ashland, WI, sister-in-law, Nona Susienka, Mason, WI, great aunt Mae Gerlach, Iron River, WI, and many nieces and nephews.

Jean was a self-taught business woman, opening The Fabric and Craft Shop in Aurora, MN in 1974 as a sole proprietor and operating it until her retirement in 1995. She imparted her skills to countless individuals, teaching them the art of sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Beyond her entrepreneurial success, Jean's passions spanned from competitive card games like Bridge, to immersing herself in literature as a voracious reader. A lifelong learner, she embodied the role of a natural teacher.  As she herself was not privileged to go to college, she emphasized to her children and grandchildren the importance of taking advantage of the opportunity for higher education. She was very proud that all of her children and grandchildren obtained college degrees.

Jean loved to watch old movies, eat popcorn and Red Delicious apples for supper, and turtle sundaes heavy on the caramel, hot fudge and pecans.  She loved to travel, learn about and try foods from different cultures.  Jean's deep pride in her Scottish and Hungarian heritage was evident in her cherished tradition of baking dozens of kolaches each Christmas, a gesture of love shared with family and friends.

Jean had a passion for golf and was a member of the Eshquaguma Country Club for 53 years.  The club was her “happy place” and she became an integral part of its community.  Over the years, she participated in numerous golf tournaments, showcasing her skill and sportsmanship on the course. When physical challenges limited her ability to play full rounds of golf, Jean volunteered her time to teach the summer youth golf program, imparting her knowledge and love for the game to younger generations. Her patience, encouragement, and vibrant spirit touched the lives of countless club members and aspiring young golfers.

Jean’s parting words of wisdom were always, “Have More Fun!!!”   She was the embodiment of fun and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. Her memory will forever be cherished.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date with interment at the Rauha Cemetery to follow.

Memorials can be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Palo, MN, the Eshquaguma Memorial Fund- Youth Golf Program, or the American Cancer Society.
