John Peter Maninga (77) of Big Lake, MN and formerly of Hoyt Lakes, MN, died on September 25, 2025.  He was born to Walter and Verna (Wehmes) Maninga on September 5, 1948, in Menahga, MN.  He graduated from Cherry High School and in 1972 he married Patricia Jean Volney in Virginia, MN.

John worked as a millwright at Erie Mining/LTV Steel in Hoyt Lakes for 34 years until it’s closing in 2001.  He then spent 12 years at McLane in Northfield, MN as a maintenance mechanic.  When he was not at work he loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.  He could always be found at one of their sporting events.  John enjoyed fishing, watching sports on TV, playing cards (particularly smear) and helping others whenever they needed. 

John is survived by his wife of 53 years Patricia; children: Tracy (Todd) Westlund of Alexandria, MN, Cara (David) Doyea of Anoka, MN, and Gary (Maria) Maninga of Hoyt Lakes, MN; grandchildren: Jack Westlund, Joe Westlund, Ella Westlund, Blake (Faith Doyea-Boss) Doyea, Haley (Nate) Beberg, Caitlin Doyea, Mariah (Sam) Bennett, Adriana Sheets, and Hunter Maninga; great grandchild Joshua Doyea-Boss; brother-in-law Roger Ricke; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by father Walter Maninga, mother Verna Ohlgren, stepfather Elmer Ohlgren, father-in-law Thomas Volney, mother-in-law Mae Volney, brother Larry Maninga and sister Ellen Ricke. 

A Memorial Service for John will be held at Bauman-Cron Funeral Home in Virginia, MN on Monday, October 20, 2025.  A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will continue until the 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service.  Inurnment will follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery.
