Marian Beverly (Johnson) Holmes, 93, longtime resident of Virginia died on Friday, April 5th, 2024 due to complications from recent surgery. Marian (aka Nana Marian and Nana the Great) was born on March 12, 1931 in Duluth to Herbert and Grace Johnson. She was a proud graduate of Central High School where she was active in just about every school activity and function. She married Allen E. Holmes on May 20th, 1950 and moved from Duluth to Virginia becoming one of the first residents of post war housing in Midway. Marian was a strong community member and participated and chaired many local and state organizations and committees. She often joked that one group contacted her to be their next president and she did not even belong! Her work with her Girl Scout troop and Boy Scout den built strong relationships. She worked at the former Sears and Roebucks Department store and then the East Range Clinic all in the financial departments. So many lifelong friends made with those organizations. She was a 40+ year volunteer for Grandma’s Marathon and received a Volunteer of the Year Award.
Marian is survived by daughters Candace Furo (Mark Lindberg) of Forest Lake, Constance Christenson of Virginia, and Cassandra Holmes of Duluth. She was extremely proud of all her grandchildren Erin Furo, Cassy Anne (Doug) Schauwitzer, Todd (Stephanie) Furo, Brian (Lindsey) Christenson, Brent Christenson, Kim (John) Dickinson, Scott Christenson, Cary (Dawn) Landstrom, Andrea (Jon) Pfeifer, Alyssa (Wyatt) Hammell, Katie (Ned) Halling, Ian (Malarie) Holmes, Odin (Hannah) Holmes, Rick Perez, and Heather Holmes (Scott Curtis). To her the icing on her cake were her great grandchildren Olivia and Henry Schauwitzer; Simon, Samuel and Eva Furo; Brenna, Nicholas, and Ryan Christenson; Lillian, Owen, and Josslyn Christenson; Mikaela Christenson and Kaleb Dickinson; Maverick Christenson; Brandon, Halle, Chance and Cameron Landstrom; Axel, Felix and Emilee Pfeiffer; August Hammell; Otillia Halling; Monroe and Ellae Holmes; Juniper Holmes; Ryan and Chloe Perez; and Gaige Curtis.
Marian also knew a lot of heartache as she was preceded in death way too soon by her husband Allen E., sons Allen R. and Thomas, granddaughter Jamie, grandson Brady and brother Bob.
Funeral services will be held on April 15th at 11:30 a.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Virginia. To express condolences online please see: www.baumanfuneralhome.com.
