Russell Huttunen Obituary

Russell (Russ) Lloyd Huttunen

We are sad to announce the passing of our dad, Russell (Russ) Lloyd Huttunen, who passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on November 29th, 2023, after a courageous battle with malignant melanoma.

Dad was born on January 23, 1940, in Makinen, MN, to Raino and Lillian Huttunen.  Dad lived his entire life in Makinen and graduated with the class of 1958 from Cotton High School.

On July 16, 1960, he married the love of his life, Connie (Dill) Huttunen.  Together, they built their home on the lake and enjoyed the beautiful sunsets, raised their family, traveled, entertained family and friends for many Vikings football games, and danced together for 63 wonderful years.

Dad was a strong-willed Finlander and the epitome of the Finnish word SISU. With a strong work ethic, he worked at Erie Mining Company for 30 years, while at the same time starting a family business of logging and trucking (R&R Trucking).  He loved his Mack trucks, loaders, and everything equipment related and was always willing to lend a hand to a friend in need that needed work done.  Dad was also proud of his work with the Makinen Volunteer Fire Department and for many years served as Fire Chief.

Dad was also an avid outdoorsman.  He loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and four-wheeling adventures in the sand dunes of Yuma with family and friends.   Whether fishing in the boat or fishing on the ice, he loved his time putting a line in the water.   Whether sun, rain, sleet, or snow, he loved the thrill of the outdoor adventure and the shenanigans that came with it.  We will always remember our weekends at the hunting shack with late nights of playing cards and shaking dice while enjoying a few cold beverages.

Most importantly, Dad was a loving husband, father, and friend.  We are proud that Dad’s legacy will live on with his family.  Dad is survived by his wife Connie Huttunen, four children including; Cindy (John) Altobelli, Cara (Jim) Ellis, Ross (Kristi) Huttunen, Candace Huttunen, six grandchildren including; Kyle (Jenna) Altobelli, Jennica (Cody) Hasbargen, John (Jennifer Kraml) Ellis, Nicole Huttunen, Josh (Alissa) Huttunen, Lauren Huttunen, four great-grandchildren including; Kaleb Altobelli, Joanna Altobelli, Ethan Ellis, and Lilia Hasbargen.

We would especially like to thank the Essentia Hospice Team for the care and compassion they provided dad.  A very special thank you to his nurse Andi Hoffman, who was an angel that could talk him into anything (not an easy task), Dr. Keith Peterson, and the numerous friends and neighbors that were always there when needed.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life to reminisce and celebrate dad’s life on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 12pm-3pm at Timber’s Edge Bar and Grill, Highway 53/Wilson Rd, Eveleth, MN 55734
